We have an ongoing family joke around these parts. Whenever I purchase pretzels, the kids and undocumented husband, Hukee whine "get the gluten-free pretzels! Always get the gluten-free pretzels! They're better!"
So now, I do. I just go g-free. Because they're truly 8x better than the plain old pretzels.
And even though I'm the only one who consistently aims for at least 80% g-free eating, when it comes to pretzels: the fam is 100% cavefam.
Who wants wheat in their snackables? #notmykids
Because of our pretzel passion, we've started buying bags of gluten-free snacks just to see which we like better than the "original" versions. If we all prefer the g-free versions better, why not go for the good stuff?
So, I was delighted to discover and work with with a whole new brand of gluten-free crackers last week. Crunchmaster contacted me, and we delightedly dove right into taste-testing. For purely scientific reasons, of course.
We noshed our way through 8 different bags of Crunchmaster Multi-Seed and Multi-Grain flavors, and the familial consensus was: "get the gluten-free crackers! Always get the gluten-free crackers! They're better!"
Allrighty, then. And perfect timing. Because we've been putting together plans for Superbowl Sunday. So why not work these newfound snackables into some lovely little recipe that would make the mamagut happy, and the kids stoked on snackin'.
I'd found a block of smoked cheddar at the grocery store. And was craving some sort of gooey, dippable fondue. If such was going to be made for game-day, beer seemed a proper pairing.
But here's a zany note: both fondue and beer are traditionally gluten-full. Which meant we'd have to work our way through some ingredient tweaking to create a big, glorious platter of g-free approved eats. Several of our guests would want fully gluten-free party eats. So we set to work swapping cornstarch (arrowroot also works) into the roux, instead of flour. Using a favorite crisp, local gluten-free beer (green apple hard cider also tastes great).
While I melted the fondue together, the fam chopped apples and chicken sausage. Places grapes and crackers on a platter. And 20 minutes later, we were dipping into one heck of a snack tray. Wildly good and gooey. 100% gluten-free.
Whether you're Superbowling or simply looking for serious snackabilling, I'm over hear hollering atchya with a megaphone: "gogluten-free! Go for gluten-free! It's better!"
Thus far, in the case of pretzels, crackers and Smoked Cheddar & Beer Fondue, it's true. Gluten-free is the way to go.
