OKAY. SO.
Behind the scenes factoid here: yesterday, we'd driven to the condo to clean it for our next Airbnb humans. I threw out my back while changing the sheets. Snuck in a quick nordic ski. Grabbed a hot coffee, drove home like lightning. The BF had to get to the airport for a biz trip to Spain at 3pm. It was 2:15.
Somewhere around 2:17, I was all: "WHOOAAAAA. I DO NOT HAVE MY DAY 29 RECIPE READY."
Day 29 was tomorrow. (Which now, is today.) (Time is a vortex, I don't even get it anymore.)
The sun was already melting behind winter clouds. By the time I got home from airport dropping, I'd be SOL.
So I had to make a recipe. LIKE. NOW.
2:19 p.m.
PROMPT: Chicken sausage
I frantically, frenetically, pull out leftovers from the fridge. A loaf of savory challah, a curly bunch of kale, parmesan and cheddar, cream, butter, chicken sausage.
Toss it all together with more garlic than any soul has ever ever.
Bake for 23 minutes. Take a bath.
2:42 pm.
The boyfriend is packing the car. Hollering that he's ready to go.
I slide the pizza onto a tile backdrop, snap. snap. snap. snap.
2:46 pm. Boyfriend honks.
2:48 pm. Mound pizza onto a plate, place it on the stove so the puppy can't nibble on it whilst we are away.
And that's how this pizza was born.
After airport dropping, photo editing at the SLC library and party hitting with two cute GF's, I finally returned home at 12:01 am. Tummy rumbling, I tossed a piece of pizza into the micro, warming it just until the cheese began to melt.
Took a bite.
And: ZOMG. For a 6-minute accident recipe, shoved into the corners of a rather busy Saturday, this garlic-breaddy, kale-piled, gloriously cheesy pizza, is about to become a staple. It's that freaky kind of delicious--salt and garlic and cheese and glory.
Let's just give ourselves 8 minutes to make it next time, capiche?
Chicken and Kale Sausage French Bread Pizza
Serves 8-10 | 5 mins prep | 20 mins total
- 1 loaf French Bread, sliced in half (I used Challah)
- 5 cloves garlic, freshly chopped
- 4 Tbsp butter, melted
- 2/3 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup + 1/4 cup sharp cheddar, divided
- 2/3 + 3 Tbsp shredded parmesan, divided
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated pepper
- 1 1/2 Tbsp cornstarch
- 1 head curly kale, destemmed and finely chopped
- 4-6 chicken sausage links, sliced thin
- Heat oven to 425ºF
Slice French Bread in half lengthwise (sandwich-style), place cut-side-up on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
In a large bowl, combine garlic, butter, cream, 3/4 cup cheddar, 2/3 parmesan, salt, pepper, cornstarch and kale. Toss until well mixed. Pile this mixture atop French Bread. Arrange sausage links on top. Sprinkle with remaining cheese.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly. Cut into pieces with a sharp knife. Enjoy!
